On Tuesday, August 12, 2026, a deep partial solar eclipse will be visible over Germany. It will begin around 7:10 p.m. (CEST) and last until sunset. Especially in southwestern Germany, such as in Freiburg or Konstanz, the Moon will cover up to 92% of the Sun.
Here in Frankfurt, an coverage of about 88% is expected. In Iceland, northern Spain, and the Balearic Islands, the solar eclipse will even be total: the Moon will completely cover the Sun.
For the best view, head to a mountain or hill with an unobstructed view of the western horizon.
The next deep partial solar eclipse in Germany will take place on August 2, 2027. However, the sun will only be covered by about 50% then. A total solar eclipse won’t be visible in Central Europe again until 2081. The eclipse on August 12, 2026, is therefore a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Even though 90% of the sun is covered, its light remains extremely bright and dangerous. To enjoy the event safely, you need certified solar eclipse glasses. Looking directly at the sun without protection can cause permanent damage to the retina. Regular sunglasses, CDs, or homemade filters are not sufficient and can even pose an additional risk to your eyes.
