Her vision for “Women in STEM”

My vision is for women’s work in STEM fields to become the norm. That would mean that any woman interested in STEM would be able to and allowed to work successfully in those fields. Unfortunately, that is not the case at all right now.

Short biography

Freelance trainer, author, and consultant specializing in software engineering. She has 28 years of professional experience in practice and research: 7 years as a consultant and project manager in IT projects, 13 years in research and university teaching, including substitute and visiting professorships. She has authored more than 100 specialist publications, delivers regular conference presentations, serves as an official supporter of the IREB Board, and is a co-author of the IREB curriculum and handbook for the CPRE Advanced Level certification in Requirements Management. Additionally, she acts as an IT expert for the BISG e.V.

Did you have a clear idea of what your future would look like when you were a child? How did that evolve? Did your vision come true?

As a child, I couldn’t even imagine that I wouldn’t be allowed to do the same things men do simply because of my gender. I read stories about explorers and researchers, about writers and company founders, and I wanted to experience all of that too. Forty years later, I am worn down by the massive resistance our society puts up against women’s success.

Role models from books. In real life, I received little support or encouragement. Marie Curie, for example, really impressed me. Of course, my good grades in science classes and the enjoyment I got from them were also encouraging. At the same time, however, I was also interested in archaeology, naturopathy, and animal behavior. So I could just as easily have chosen a different field of study.

Through school. Our teachers were very dedicated and made the lessons interesting. We also had extra reading material from the public library and science shows on TV. *Die Sendung mit der Maus* was also very important. It gave us a behind-the-scenes look at various professions. The internet didn’t exist back then.

As a freelancer, the only thing holding me back is that there are only 24 hours in a day. I get to choose which topics I work on, as well as which and how many projects I take on. I’m no longer held back by a boss who tells me, “You can’t do that.” Right now, I’m spending a lot of time working on artificial intelligence, which I find really exciting.

Passion for the subject, discipline and hard work, independence. As a woman in a male-dominated field, you need a thick skin.

Never give up too soon! Perseverance pays off! Above all, make sure you develop and refine your own skill set. If necessary, invest your free time and your own money in your professional development. Don’t let anything slow you down!
